WHAT IS WATER BAPTISM?Baptism means to immerse under water. It is a vital part of the believer’s life.It is an outward sign of the inward grace you received through salvation. Ephesians 2:8It represents the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Colossians 2:12Jesus commanded it. Matthew 28:19-20
WHY BE BAPTIZED?John the Baptist honored baptism. He preached repentance and baptized many in the Jordan River. Matthew 3:16
Jesus honored baptism. He walked about 70 miles to be baptized by John the Baptist and said, “Thus it becometh us to fulfill all righteousness.”Matthew 3:14-15
God honored baptism. At the time Jesus was baptized, God spoke from Heaven, saying, “This is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased.” Matthew 3:17
The Apostles honored baptism. On the Jewish Day of Pentecost, Peter preached repentance and baptism. “Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about 3000 souls.” Acts 2:36-41
Christians in the Word honored baptism.Philip a Christian minister, led an Ethiopian to accept Christ and be baptized. “But when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women.” Acts 8:12
WHO SHOULD BE BAPTIZED?Every believer should be baptized. A believer is someone who has confessed Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. They believe that Jesus Christ’s death on the cross for their sins is the only thing that connects them to God and gives them eternal life.
CAN BABIES OR CHILDREN BE BAPTIZED?In the Bible, we find parents bringing children to Jesus. He held them and prayed for them but he did not baptize them, nor did he tell anyone to baptize them. The New Testament shows no example of baptism when the person did not request it. If baptism is a public expression of salvation, only those who have received salvation should experience it. All instances of baptism followed an individual’s decision to give their life to Christ. Therefore a child must be old enough to confess, believe and understand the true meaning of baptism before we baptize them.
If you experienced baptism before you confessed and believed Christ or if you experienced baptism as an infant, the full meaning and significance of baptism has yet to take place in your life. We strongly encourage you to be baptized as a believer in Christ.
